Chepstow & District Rotary Club Celebrates the Successful Completion of “Source of Life” Charity Walk by 1100 District Governor Rtn Drewe Lacey
On 21 September 2024, the Chepstow & District Rotary Club, part of Rotary District 1100, proudly welcomed walkers to the finish line of the "Source of Life" project, led by District Governor Drewe Lacey. The walk, spanning an impressive 136 miles along the River Wye, commenced at Plynlimon and concluded after a challenging ten-day journey in the Grandstand at Riverside Park, Chepstow. Despite inclement weather, which required a last-minute venue change, the spirit of Rotary’s dedication to supporting the disadvantaged was on full display.
The project, which raised funds for GIST (Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumour), a cancer charity, and various environmental charities within the Wye Valley, was personal for Drewe Lacey, himself a GIST cancer patient. Accompanied by his daughter Harriet, Drew’es determination and resilience embodied the values of Rotary—supporting communities and making a difference. “Walking the Wye was not just a physical challenge but a chance to raise awareness and vital funds for causes that impact our region and beyond,” said Drewe.
As the weather deteriorated, the Chepstow & District Rotary Club, working quickly and collaboratively, negotiated with the Chepstow Town Council to move the event to the Drill Hall at the 99th hour. This swift action ensured that the gathered Rotarians, guests, and supporters could celebrate the momentous occasion in comfort. The event was further honoured by the presence of Rotarian Eve Conway, Rotary International Director and President of Rotary International in Great Britain & Ireland (RIBI) 2016/17.
Drewe Lacey’s journey along the River Wye was more than just a walk; it was a testament to Rotary’s ideals of service, perseverance, and compassion. As participants and supporters gathered to cheer him across the finish line, the energy in the room was electric, a reminder of the power of community and the impact that dedicated individuals can have.
The Chepstow & District Rotary Club is proud to have supported this remarkable project and looks forward to continuing its work in service to others. For more information on future events or to join our efforts, please contact us or visit our next meeting.
Chepstow & District Rotary Club Hosts Inspiring Talk on Global Humanitarian Work
On 24 September 2024, members of the Chepstow & District Rotary Club gathered at the Berkeley Hotel, Chepstow, for a captivating and deeply moving illustrated talk entitled "Fun & Faith: A Journey Across the World," delivered by Mike and Mandy Scott. The couple, dedicated Christians who worship at St Luke’s in Tutshill, shared the remarkable story of their humanitarian efforts around the world, following a life-altering personal tragedy.
Mike and Mandy lost their teenage daughter to toxic shock syndrome, an experience that profoundly changed their lives. In response to this heartbreak, they dedicated themselves to helping the disadvantaged in places as far afield as Russia, Uganda, Tanzania, and most recently, Ukraine. Their mission to serve those in need has taken them across the globe, delivering vital supplies and bringing hope to struggling communities.
The Rotary members listened attentively as the Scotts recounted their recent journey to Ukraine, where they delivered much-needed supplies to people affected by the ongoing conflict. Earlier this year, the Chepstow & District Rotary Club had contributed to this mission by supplying 16 mobile solar power banks, which Mike and Mandy personally took with them to Ukraine. These solar banks provided crucial access to electricity for communities suffering from power shortages due to the war.
During the talk, Mike and Mandy spoke with passion about their faith and how it has guided their desire to help others. Their stories were filled with moments of joy, challenges, and unwavering commitment to making a difference in the lives of those less fortunate. "Helping people in difficult circumstances has become our life’s calling," said Mike, reflecting on how their journey of faith has given them the strength to turn personal tragedy into a force for good.
The evening was a powerful reminder of the impact that individuals, driven by compassion and faith, can have on communities in crisis. The members of the Chepstow & District Rotary Club expressed their admiration for the Scotts' tireless efforts and their gratitude for the opportunity to contribute to such an important cause.
The Rotary Club continues to support charitable projects both locally and internationally, reinforcing its commitment to humanitarian aid.
CHEPSTOW & DISTRICT ROTARY CLUB VISITS “GREENFIELDS “GARDENS.
On an overcast and damp afternoon, members of the Chepstow & District Rotary Club had the pleasure of visiting the renowned "Greenfields" Garden in Brockweir. The garden, a stunning example of horticultural artistry, is home to many mature trees and a diverse collection of unusual plants and shrubs. These have been carefully planted to form a series of discrete garden areas, each with its unique character and charm.
The visit was made even more enjoyable by the warm fellowship shared among the Rotarians. They were particularly impressed by the passion and expertise of head gardener Jackie Healy, who has a keen interest in the propagation of plants. Jackie’s approach to gardening is not just about cultivating plants, but about creating a sculptural living creation, where every plant is thoughtfully placed to contribute to the overall design.
The visit to "Greenfields" was an extremely pleasant experience, leaving the Rotarians with a deep appreciation for the beauty and creativity that can be achieved through gardening.
