A Story of Love and Hope Amidst Adversity

In a heartwarming tale of love and resilience, Rotarian Guy Wison, 49, Batchelor and dedicated member of the Chepstow & District Rotary Club, and Ms. Kulyk, a Ukrainian refugee, have tied the knot after a two year-long romance that began in the midst of humanitarian aid efforts.

Guy first met Ms. Kulyk (Karyna) a lawyer from Ukraine, and her young son (Serafim) while volunteering at the St. Briavels Ukrainian Support Hub in the Forest of Dean, providing essential support to refugees fleeing the conflict in Ukraine.

His work at the hub included distributing warm clothing, offering financial assistance, and providing transportation to those in need.

Their connection was instant. What started as a simple offer for a day trip blossomed into a profound relationship. Over the next months, Guy became a constant presence in Karyna’s life, helping her navigate her new environment and offering unwavering support.

He often babysat Serafim, allowing Ms. Kulyk to find work, (waiting tables), and begin rebuilding her life.

Guy proposed to Karyna on New Year's Eve, capping off a 18 months of shared experiences and growing affection. The couple married on May 28th in a ceremony that celebrated their journey together and the community that brought them together.

Before their wedding, the couple received a special blessing from the Archbishop of Canterbury, who was visiting the area. This blessing added a profound spiritual dimension to their union and was a cherished moment for both Guy and Karyna.

Their story is a testament to the power of kindness and the unexpected paths that life can take. It underscores the significant impact that community support and volunteerism can have on the lives of those in need, and how love can flourish even in the most challenging circumstances.

Chepstow & District Rotary Club is committed to community service and international humanitarian efforts including support for refugees and disaster relief and has given untold support to St. Briavels Ukrainian Support Hub, which is dedicated to providing aid and support to Ukrainian refugees
